My thoughts on '13 Reasons Why'

This post is a little different to most of the posts on this blog. It is the first time I'm writing about something that doesn't relate to my usual geeky theme. This is because I wanted to share my thoughts about the recent Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

If you have not yet heard about this series, it is a tv show based on a book about the suicide of a teenage girl called Hannah. The series looks at the events leading up to Hannah's death, focusing on the individuals and situations that caused her to take her own life. The story is told by Hannah herself, through a recording she made on thirteen sides of cassette tapes before her death. It is a dark and heartbreaking story, but it highlights some of the real life issues young people face on a daily basis.

Although 13 Reasons Why was difficult to watch at points and made me both sad and angry at the world, I continued watching until the end, because it was telling such an important story. It is amazing that a show like this has been given such a large platform. This gripping and emotive series has raised awareness for mental health issues and given young people an opportunity to discuss the pressures and struggles they face - making them feel less alone. Personally, I think this is amazing.

However, I should warn you that it is not a good show to binge watch on your own. The series tackles some difficult issues and shows some extremely graphic and distressing scenes. If you have suffered from mental health or abuse yourself, you may find the show particularly difficult to watch. I only watched one episode on my own, but instantly regretted doing so because of the upsetting content shown.

Even though there were some very distressing scenes in the show that I found difficult to watch, I am glad that a show like this has been given a platform and has therefore given mental health sufferers a voice. The show takes viewers on a heartbreaking journey, but it is no doubt an important story to be told.

If you have not yet seen the series, I highly recommend watching it. Not just because it was well written, had great performances and was well produced, but because it makes you think about some of the pain people can suffer and what we can do to help each other get through it.

If you have watched the series, please let me know how you felt about it in the comments below. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Why Wonder Woman is so important...

The modern world is a scary place. Throughout history there have been great struggles for people to get their voice heard, whether that be because of prejudices against their gender, race or sexuality. Our ancestors fought for our rights throughout history to enable us all to be considered equal. Sadly, recent events in the world have highlighted that for every few steps forward we take, there can sometimes be a step back. In this blog post I'm going to talk about the importance of having female role models in films and comics in a time where women are sadly still having to fight for equality.

As a female in her twenties I have been privileged enough to be brought up in a generation where sexism is a thing of the past... mostly. I've never really called myself a feminist, as in the modern day we live in I hadn't felt a need. I hadn't come across many sexist remarks or actions. That was of course until recent events. The world appears to have taken a step back into the dark ages where it is seemingly okay for a man of great power to harass and insult women, making them feel inferior.

I was inspired by seeing women all over the world take to the streets to protest these dark times. I wouldn't want any young girls growing up to think it's okay for women to be treated any differently because of their gender.

This year powerful and inspiring female characters are due to be showcased on the silver screen. Wonder Woman will soon be empowering females everywhere in her own film and I for one can't wait. It is so important for young girls to have role models (even fictional ones) to show them that women can be strong, intelligent and powerful. It's vital to ensure that the next generation will improve fairness and equality and showing these attributes in films is a great way to get the message across.

Along with Wonder Woman, we will soon be seeing fictional female icons such as Captain Marvel and Lara Croft in cinemas across the globe. I cannot stress enough how excited I feel about this. The media is extremely influential and has a massive impact on public opinion. Blockbuster films showing strong women in the fictional world, can help women feel confident in themselves in the real world.

These fictional characters show women as being strong, powerful, inspiring and independent - all characteristics that are true to real life! I feel extremely lucky to be living in an age where women are professional CEO's, inventors, innovators, doctors, lawyers, politicians and generally just kick-ass ladies! I may see fictional heroines as inspirational idols, but I also see them as a reflection on modern society and the amazing women that are a part of it.

I feel extremely privileged to be living in a forward thinking generation that generally advocates equality. However, there are still some small minded individuals who are prejudicial towards people different to themselves. Those people need to pay attention to the world around them and appreciate their mothers, sisters and daughters, because lets face it… all of us ladies have a bit of girl power inside us.

We are all Wonder Women, we just need the confidence and support to show that off!

It's okay to be childish sometimes

With The Lego Batman Movie hitting the big screen I think this is the perfect time to remind ourselves that it's okay to be a little childish sometimes.

Everyone loves Lego
There's nothing wrong with embracing your inner kid and enjoying something not intended for grownups. We all need to experience a bit of nostalgia once in a while and take some time to escape the stresses of adult life.

As someone who is a fan of geeky films, TV shows, games and more, I often get bombarded with the questions: "isn't that a bit childish?" or "isn't that for kids?" This is something that really frustrates me because it is a sign that people take themselves too seriously in life. If you think there's something wrong with having bit of fun and enjoying something youthful and silly, then I think there's something wrong with you. Adult life is full of serious decisions and tedious responsibilities, something even the most organised people get overwhelmed with at times. We all deserve to treat ourselves to a little escapism and I think watching kids movies can be a great way of doing so.

I saw The Lego Batman Movie at the weekend with my boyfriend and we had a great time. I honestly would really recommend this film if you need some time off to have fun, as it was a really entertaining film to watch. I loved the original Lego movie and this was a fantastic sequel that encompassed a huge cast of everyone’s favourite heroes and villains – there was even a Lego Dalek!

When we were at the cinema it didn't matter that most of the audience was made up of families with young children, we didn't care what anyone thought because we were happy enjoying the film. I think it's always vital to relax, take time out to have fun and most importantly to not worry about what other people may think. Life is full of difficulties, so why not spend your free time enjoying being a little bit childish? You know you want to!

Do you agree with me? I would love to hear your thoughts, so let me know what you think in the comments.

Geeky Garments - Black Milk Clothing

I always love geek themed fashion (hence the name of this blog)! Combining nerdy culture with something super stylish is a sure way to look fabulous. So, when I found out about the enormous range of geeky garments Black Milk Clothing had to offer I knew I would have to check them out.

I spotted a few of Black Milk's fabulous fashion items on my Instagram feed and instantly fell in love. When I visited their online store I found some amazing items to fit a wide range of fandoms, from Harry Potter and Doctor Who to DC and Marvel.

The clothes they sell are quite expensive, but I loved the range of designs and had heard so many positive comments about the quality of their products, so of course I was tempted into trying it out.

I settled on this awesome Killing Joke bomber. I love the Batman comic strip on the front of the jacket but the highlight is the amazing Joker design on the back. I absolutely adore this jacket. It may be over the top and outlandish, but it provides a fabulously fashionable opportunity to express your inner geek.

I also bought these gorgeous tights to go with the jacket. I adore these tights as they look like cute but grungy thigh high socks. They can add an extra bit of edgy style to any outfit and definitely make a winning combination with the Killing Joke bomber jacket.

As I said before the prices for Black Milk's products are high and if you live in the UK like me you have to dish out a bit extra for shipping. But despite the price tag, I am thrilled with my purchases from Black Milk Clothing and think it is a perfect brand for anyone looking for some super stylish geeky garments

Let me know in the comments what you think about this brand. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Goodbye 2016

Oh my goodness it's 2017 already! I can't believe it. It is definitely time for an update. The past year has flown by, but despite this I feel that a lot has happened and it's important to reflect on it.

Hello 2017
For many people 2016 was a bad year, there were numerous shock outcomes in politics around the world and we lost so many beloved stars. The geek community took a particularly big hit losing legendary actors such as: Alan Rickman, Kenny Baker, Carrie Fisher and many more. Each time we heard another name of a celebrity who had passed away the world grieved together, as we all remembered the magical stories these talented performers brought to life.

Despite all of the grief 2016 brought, for me personally it was a pretty good year. This time last year I was in the midst of exams while also trying to write my dissertation and organise numerous other university projects. Now, I have graduated university with a first class honours degree and I even themed my dissertation around the geek community that I love!

Since graduating I have landed myself two exciting jobs that I am now hectically jumping between (in a good way). Through doing these jobs I have had numerous wonderful experiences and have met so many amazing people including: Star Wars and Harry Potter actor Warwick Davies and Nadiya Hussain from The Great British Bake Off.

In the geek world we have had some high points as well. I feel that being a geek is gradually becoming more 'cool' which I see as a great thing. In my eyes the more popular nerd culture is, the more geeky content we will get. For example, we have had some amazing science fiction and fantasy films this year. Personally, I especially loved Star Wars: Rouge One and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

On top of all this I am thrilled with how far my blog has come. This year I have improved the rate of content I produce as well as the design of my blog. Plus, my @GlamAndGeek Instagram account is steadily gaining more and more followers who are wonderful geeky people like me. I am so grateful for this online community and the fact that I have found so many amazing like-minded people through writing this blog. I feel so lucky to be part of such a friendly and positive online community - especially as its something that seems to be so rare nowadays. So, thank you to all of you.

I can't wait to see what 2017 has in store for me. Who knows where I'll be this time next year?! I hope you are all as excited as I am to see what this new year brings.

Let me know in the comments how you felt about 2016 and what goals you have for this year.

Happy New Year!
